You’re probably thinking: ‘So what makes you think your recipe is any good?’ I have references. Jamaican beef patty lovers who explained to me exactly how these babies are supposed to taste. Then once made, they tasted them and the reaction was unanimously positive.
As a matter of fact, I remember something like: ‘It’s legit bro!’
Plus, they disappeared in a matter of minutes. Minutes I tell ya!
Here are some of the basic things you need to know about Jamaican patties.

How to make Jamaican Patties Pastry? It’s your basic buttery shortcrust, with turmeric. Since we are making a vegan Jamaican patty recipe, we’re going to substitute the eggs for flax eggs and butter for vegan butter. That’s it!
Can I make it gluten-free? Yes! As a matter of fact, if you subscribe to our blog you will get access to our members library which includes a gluten free crust recipe for these patties.
How to make a vegan filling for Jamaican Patties? to get that awesome meaty bite, we’re going to use red lentils and quinoa with some coconut cream to bind it all together. Plus, the coconut cream helps cool down the Jamaican allspice and cayenne in there. I could use vegan beef, but why? It’s processed like you couldn’t believe and is more expensive.
Therefore, not Broke foodie$ friendly.
How to eat Jamaican Patties? This is a serious question. I’ll answer with one word: Ketchup. Drown it. Don’t even think twice.
That is your recipe in a nutshell, my friend. Correction: Your vegan Jamaican patty, in a nutshell.
My advice to you: If you do enjoy those crispy buttery edges, make your patties square instead of round. Just like in the photo below.
Here is what you will need to make the pastry.
- Non Bleached All purpose flour.
- Vegan butter. I used Earth Balance.
- flax eggs
- turmeric
- pinch of salt
- little bit of water
That’s about it. This make for a crispy, flaky crust, and as long as you manage to keep your filling at just the right amount of moisture, you will get something like this.

- ¼ Cup water room temp
- 1 Tsp turmeric
- 1 tsp salt
Filling
- 2 onions
- ¼ tsp celery seed in the pan with the onions to be warmed
- 2 tbsp canola oil
- ¼ tsp cumin
- ¼ tsp summer savory
- 1.5 tbsp Jamaican allspice
- 1/2 tsp cloves
- 1.5 tbsp paprika
- 1 1/2 tsp cayenne
- 2 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp nutritional yeast optional
- 1.5 tbsp pepper used ½ Szechuan ¼ pink African peppercorns ¼ black pepper
- 2 tbsp rum or sherry dark alcohol
- 1 cup red lentils
- 1 cup quinoa
- 1/2 coconut cream 15 oz can
- 1/2 tsp turmeric
- 1/4 tsp liquid smoke
Instructions
Pastry:
- Add your turmeric, salt and flour into a bowl and mix.
- Using your hands, cut your butter into the flour. You should end up with a very sandy texture.
- Now add your flax egg and your water.
- Bring your dough together and do not over work it.
- Form a ball and wrap in film paper.
- Let it chill in the fridge until the filling is ready.
Filling:
- Start by cutting your onions and warming up your pan to medium-high
- Add the celery seed and oil to your pan – make sure they do not burn !! You simply want them to release their flavour
- Add your onions and stir frequently
- Boil 2 litres of water, continue stirring and cooking your onions
- When your onions start to brown, add boiling water (about 3 splashes) to help them caramelize
- Once the water evaporates, add 2 tbsp rum or sherry
- Once the onions are browned, add some water, your spices, the lentils & quinoa.
- Stir, add water until the mixture is covered with water – cover and lower the heat to medium (you want the mixture to be simmering but not boiling)
- Once the water is evaporated, check to see if cooked or if it needs more water, add coconut cream (about ½ a can, omitting the coconut water.
- Pre heat your oven to 375.
- Once cooked, add turmeric and liquid smoke – shut the heat but leave the pot on the same spot, stir occasionally and let it completely cool down (Do not skip steps, if you use a warm mixture with the cold pastry the pastry will melt and you will be left with a mess)
- Take your dough out of the fridge and roll it on a flour dusted surface. The thickness you are looking for is 1/4''
- Cut it into squares(You can also do circles) and scoop in about 2 Tbsp of filling on one side of your squares.
- Lightly brush the edges of your squares with water.
- Close your patties and seal by using a fork.
- Lay a some parchemin paper to cover your baking sheet and place all your patties on it.
- Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until they look golden brown. The Baking time will vary depending on your oven. Just make sure they are brown, just like the pictures.
- Let your patties completely cool and serve with some ketchup.

I think there is a missing step on how to do and fill pastry?
Thank you for bring it to my attention Loko, I have added all the missing steps, let me know if you have any questions 🙂
How much liquid smoke?
I usually put 1/4 tsp , its up to you 🙂
Wow I could eat this filling by itself. Or on some rice. I was nervous to put so much pepper but it’s so good dude. I’m making it right now hopefully there will be some left for the pastry 😛
Lol You can sure it by itself Merg, I had some leftovers and I used it as a topping for a vegan pizza with some sweet marinara. As for the Turmeric, I usually put 1 tsp, but it’s up to your taste.
Ok they turned out great. I ended up having twice as much filling as I needed so I think I’ll double the pastry recipe in the future. It took over 30 mins for mine to begin browning in the oven maybe the type of vegan butter used affects this. I used earth balance sticks. Anyway thanks for a great recipe, definitely sharing this.
Thank you so much for letting us know how it went ! I adjusted the recipe for pastry. I too ended up having left over filling 😉
Also, how much turmeric in the filling?
These look so delicious! I love Jamaican patties and I have some friends and family who are vegan. They would probably love your version.
Oh man, I love Jamaican beef patties, and these look like such an amazing twist on them! Can’t wait to try them :-).
I see in the dough recipe list turmeric in ingredients but
I do not see it mentioned in the filling ingredients.
In the recipe it calls for adding the turmeric and
Liquid smoke in towards end but there is no mention
Of these in ingredient lists. Could you please
clarify how much of turmeric and liquid smoke in filling
Thanks making tomorrow.. also my daughter in law
made these and froze extra filling which I plan to do.
Then when craving again just need to make pastry
Hi, Sandra !
Thank you for stopping by. I have adjusted the recipe, I added the turmeric and liquid smoke quantities you need to add in the recipe. A couple of weeks ago I adjusted the pastry recipe to match the quantity of filling there is. But if you end up with more patties than you need, you can just seal them and freeze them in a ziplock. They freeze very well, and you can bake them from frozen.
Let me know if you have any other questions, enjoy !
