Hey, It’s a me!
How’s it going my Foodies? How’s your July going so far? So far, my summer has been filled with delightful little surprises … and some that were not really that delightful. The record-breaking heat wave comes to mind.
If you’re a regular reader, chances are you have noticed that during the summers, I tend to publish less recipes and focus my energy more on drinks, and anything really that does not involve turning on the stove.
And boy was that necessary during the past few weeks here in Montreal. We have had record breaking heat, and by record breaking I mean it was so hot that I spent most of the day hiding from the blistering sun.
Don’t get me wrong, I love a sunny day just as much as the next man, but after getting a few mild heat strokes, I realized that I usually have a better day when I don’t get baked by the sun.
So, I decided to stick to places in and around my neighborhood if I was to go out, and generally go out during the evening and early mornings.
That’s how I discovered that there was an amazing little Bakery hiding right under my nose.
Susy & Jose Patisserie

This by far my best discovery of the past month and I’m probably going to be seeing a lot more of them in the future.
Let me paint you a picture of this awesome little mom & pop shop. On the surface, it looks like just another neighborhood bakery that offers popular choices like croissants, cupcakes and cheesecakes … However, as soon as you look around you will notice that this shop has quite a large number of unusual items.
Because I am not shy about my curiosity for all things sweet, I asked Allen’s -the face of the business and son of Susy and Jose- to talk to me little bit more about what they have to offer and what their bakery is all about.
I’m so glad I did that.
Here is what you need to know.
Susy and Jose’s Bakery is essentially a cake shop, that specializes in Dominican-Style Cakes. What are Dominican-Style Cakes? I’m glad you asked.
On the surface, a Dominican-Style Cake looks just like a regular French/European cake. Except, you will notice that the icing is a little glossier. That my friends, is because it’s meringue based. If you dig a little deeper, you will notice that the cake itself is a little richer and denser than your average cake.
According to Susy, Dominican Cakes are butter based which gives them their signature rich texture and decadence.
I’ll tell you something man, if you’ve never had one in your life, you should go right ahead and try it. You don’t want to miss out.
#YOLO
That being said, Susy & Jose’s Patisserie caters to big events as well. That is because Jose is a master cake decorator, and you can see all of his work on their Facebook Page, if you’re into that kind of thing, of course.
Susy & Jose combine decades of experience in dessert making not to mention that Susy is a graduate from the prestigious ITHQ. So, yeah I would totally hire them for my big events.
My favorite part though, is not the custom-made cakes. As amazing as they are really.
For me the star, or rather stars of the show are the large number of Latino & Dominican treats that they have to offer.
Look at these Dulce de Leche Stuffed Churros, my wife’s favorites.
My personal favorite is their Corn Pudding or Majarete.
In my opinion, this is the best pudding I’ve ever had, and it is quickly becoming one of my favorite desserts. It’s light and savory, and the best way for me to describe it is as a cross between Flan and Custard.
It’s just phenomenal.
If you’re not into pudding, you can try their NY-Style Cheesecake, their Tres Leches or their delicious cupcakes and cakes.
You really can’t go wrong, I highly recommend this place.
Here is how you can find them.
