Hey, amigos from all around the world ! I have a super duper recipe for you today. It’s pretty simple, pretty delicious, great for parties, and super nutritious. Can you guess? Yup, it’s my vegan lentil hummus recipe !

Hummus can’t be made with lentils ! What’s wrong with you
Yup that’s a real comment.
To be fair, Hummus in Arabic does mean chickpeas. Literally, it’s not like an abstract concept or understanding of it. It’s a literal translation. Hummus = Chickpeas.
It’s a middle eastern/Egyptian dip, and I don’t know if you are familiar with mediterranean people, but they don’t like their food to be messed with. I know, I am from Morocco.
However, I reject all those traditions when it comes to food, and I say, Yes it is Hummus, I may be moroccan but I am also North-American. And my adoptive country’s tradition is all about messing with other people’s traditions.
Therefore, I preset to you, Vegan Lentil HUMMUS.
Here is the thing. Hummus can be made with pretty much anything you want, and there are a ton of variety of legumes out there that will make a fine substitution. Depending on what you prefer of course. I have tried white kidney beans before, delicious.
Today however, I am going with lentils, for simple reasons:
- High in protein
- Super high in fibre
- One of the best sources of iron out there
- It makes a super creamy hummus
- It works so well with liquid smoke and gives it a taste of bacon. B-A-C-O-N
So there you have it.
I love this dip so much, for its taste and also for its versatility. If you add a little more chickpea flour to it, and switch the olive oil with melted vegan butter you end up with a pretty good vegan pate once it has chilled.
Think about it, a vegan pate that takes literally no time to make.
If you don’t like that idea, you can use it as a condiment, in your sandwiches, wraps, or pita sandwiches. It’ll immediately boost the fibre, protein and iron content of your meal.
You can also just stick to its original use. Dip dip dip.

Creamy Vegan Lentil Hummus
- 1 15 oz can of black lentils
- 1/4 Tsp of liquid smoke
- 1 Tbsp of paprika
- 1/2 Tsp of turmeric
- 2 Tbsp of Nutritional Yeast
- Juice of half a lemon
- 2 Tbsp of Chickpea flour
- 1 Tbsp of olive oil
- Salt & Pepper to taste
- In a food processor, blend all of your ingredients until very smooth.
- Serve in a bowl with some pita crisps, nachos or spread on toast.
